Build a Mindset You Can Be Proud Of

Elon Musk was asked recently about the mindset he developed to make it to the top.  His response was that he learned how to endure more pain than most anyone else.  I’m no Elon Musk but I get it.

When I was three years old, I poked myself in the eye.  There was a strong possibility I would lose the eye.  I didn’t and I recovered.   There were a lot of people who helped me but, in the end, I should really thank Team Me.

When I was seven years old, my father died unexpectedly of a heart attack.  I don’t remember any of the details but my mom told me I consoled her.  I don’t recall feeling sorry for myself.   Maybe I should thank Team Me.

When I was sixteen years old, I remember feeling like an outcast at school.  I recall being home alone by myself – a lot.  I survived thanks to Team Me.

On my 44th birthday (at the height of the recession), I got laid off from my Fortune 500 job.  I had a big house with a big mortgage (still do).  It was scary, really scary.  I used that time to build a large network, develop my coaching and speaking skills, and I landed another job… thanks to Team Me.

Right after I turned 49 years old, when my kids were a year or two from college, I was diagnosed with stage IV Burkitt’s Lymphoma and given less than 90 days to live.  3 ½ years later, I am thriving.   I definitely credit my wife and my doctors, however, as I look deeper, I have to thank Team Me.

Not long after that episode, I quit my corporate job to pursue an entrepreneurial path focused on speaking, coaching and consulting.

The first year and the second year have been a success, but I won’t lie.  It is still hard.  Every day can feel like an uphill battle: rejection, lack of response, uncertainty and delays.

What will the next year look like?  What will the next 3-5 years look like?  I have no idea.

But one thing is for certain: I can always count on Team Me.

When you feel beaten down, when you feel nothing is going right, when you feel like giving up, someone is always on your team and that person is reading this right now.  It starts and ends with you.
