How Having Your Own Personal Code of Conduct Helps You

Hand holding compass

How being given 90 days to live was the best gift I could have received – the third way.

Yes, you read the headline correctly. In 2014, I was given 90 days to live. Thankfully, I proved the doctors wrong…and over time, you will definitely hear more of that story.

For now, suffice it to say that I live life differently now than before: with more urgency, resiliency and with a new personal code of conduct.

What could you achieve in life and work if every day you acted like you had only 90 days left?

I bet you can live with more urgency, resiliency and an updated code without going through what I went through. You can overcome limiting beliefs and fear of failure to achieve more of the things you want to achieve. So, why not start living that way now?

Here is a third way:

Create a Personal Code of Conduct

Wikipedia defines a code of conduct as a set of rules outlining the social norms of, or proper practices for, an individual, party or organization. You see codes of conduct in corporate settings all of the time but they can sound and feel very bureaucratic.

I am not speaking about that type of code of conduct. I am talking about a personal code of conduct. How YOU choose to live your life each and every day.

When you write your code down it becomes an internal compass of sorts helping you navigate the challenges of day to day work and life.

When you are dealt a blow, some adversity, you can refer back to your personal code of conduct to realign and move forward with your goals!

Here are some of mine:

I’m going to be my authentic self and stop pretending to be someone else…

I’m going to use laughter as my default approach when something doesn’t go right…

I’m going to add more spontaneity in life, not be so scheduled and rigid…

If I want to succeed, I have to double my failure rate…

Do any of these resonate for you?

What is your personal code of conduct? Do you have one?

In this group of three blog posts you also were asked:

To what do you want to devote yourself?

Where can you live with more urgency?

When you do these things, you, also, will be living like you only have 90 days left to live… and will start to achieve big goals in life and work.

Summon Courage, Change Everything.
